40 Wood Duck boxes were recently place at two of the Reed Family Companies locations just in time for this year's wood duck migration.
Both the George Reed Clements Plant and 711 Materials Waterford Plant received 20 boxes each. With the help of our awesome crews, this project was completed in record time.
At the Clements Plant the crew of Mike Kellogg, Chase Wadell, and Tom Hollis, along with California Waterfowl Association's, Jeff Smith, were able to install these boxes despite needing to navigate a newly formed pond due to our recent storms. Bringing in a boat to quickly distribute and place the nesting boxes was a great call.
At our Waterford Plant, the crew of Shawn Meza, Josh Zensen and Chris Cruise made light work of the 20 box installs. Having spotted wood duck pairs on the pond by the newly placed boxes, we are hoping for future news of how many of these box were used by nesting pairs.
A big THANK YOU to everyone that participated in making this project happen in such a short period of time.

Wood Duck Boxes going up March 2023
In partnership with the California Waterfowl Association (CWA), we are taking conservation to the next level! In September 2022, BUILD sponsored a volunteer activity to assemble wood duck boxes with the CWA. That combined effort resulted in the construction of 134 nesting boxes.
As excited as we were with that accomplishment, we now have the opportunity to take this project to the next step.
At both our 711 Waterford site and George Reeds' Clements location, we will be placing some of these boxes for use in the wood duck conservation efforts. We are currently working on scheduling the placements in March for use in this year's wood duck migration.
These birds are some of the most charismatic ducks in our state. With their distinctive squeals, colorful plumage and unusual nesting habits with hens, they typically make nests in tree cavities near streams or rivers.
We look forward to bringing you more information in future newsletters about our efforts and how we did with our boxes. The conservation efforts of the last century has brought back this species and we are excited to bring this effort to the Reed Family of Companies.
