We are pleased to announce that our Companies have teamed up with Samsara to promote a safe driving culture. Over the next 24 months, we are upgrading the dash cameras currently in most of the Reed Family of Company vehicles. The upgraded camera helps improve driver safety by providing a platform to reinforce good driving habits and help correct unsafe habits. In addition, the cameras capture critical seconds before and after an unsafe driving maneuver or incident, like a sudden swerve or collision. Those short video clips will help recognize coaching opportunities, as well as, reinforce good driving habits. Having video proof will also help exonerate drivers when they weren’t at fault during a vehicle accident. The first round of installations began in April 2022. Below are some Frequently Asked Questions:
Dash Camera FAQs:
1. Why is the company installing cameras in vehicles?
The Company puts your safety first. The upgraded camera is being installed to help improve driving
safety. It captures critical seconds before and after an unsafe driving maneuver or incident, like a sudden
swerve or collision. Those short video clips will help identify coaching opportunities as well as
opportunities to recognize drivers for doing all the right things. Having video proof will also help
exonerate drivers when they weren’t at fault during a vehicle accident.
2. How does the camera work?
When the vehicle is on, the camera continually records video on a sixty-hour loop. The video is stored
locally on the camera. The camera records video only and does not record sound.
If a triggered event occurs, the device will capture a short video clip of 5 seconds before and after the
event and save the clip to secured location to the cloud. The event can only be viewed by authorized
individuals, the Company’s safety team and your assigned Driver Coaches. If needed, additional video
time can be accessed by authorized individuals. This process allows coaching to improve driver safety.
3. Will every triggered event be reviewed?
No. The intention is not to review every event. Extreme events could cause a review with your driving
coach. Drivers exhibiting safe driving habits will see little if any review.
Who has access to my scorecard and triggered events?
Only the Company’s safety team and your assigned coach have access to the scorecard and triggered
events.
4. Do I have access to my scorecard and triggered events?
Yes. If you download the “Samara Driver” APP, you can view your scorecard. Your Safety Manager can
help you set up the APP. To access any triggered events please contact your Safety Manger or Driver
Coach.
5. Why does the camera have an inward facing lens?
Studies show that up to 90% of all traffic collisions are due to driver error. Many behaviors are not
intentional acts by drivers, but instead are unconscious habits that drivers repeat over and over without
realizing it. Without video captured through the inside lens these habits cannot be identified and
coached.
All too often company drivers are incorrectly blamed for a collision. This is even truer for heavy vehicle
operators. Lacking unmistakable evidence, law enforcement will often default to blaming the company
driver. In making this decision, the officer assumes the company driver failed to look or was distracted.
The capture of the driver though the inside view verifies the condition of the driver and provides a
strong defense to validate the driver was alert, attentive and not at
