The Reed Family Companies recognize the advanced technical skills of a new generation of talented QC technical professionals. Phil Reader of George Reed Inc. facilitates the cross-company Technical Services team and strives to enable a culture of knowledge sharing across the organization. They are an energetic group that shares a desire to learn more about their profession and about opportunities to contribute to the success of the business. The VSS Emultech lab team of Molly Gibney and Mimi Tran recently hosted a field trip to the West Sacramento binder and asphalt products laboratory. Participants had the opportunity to learn about the various tests run, how mix designs are developed, and how plant production is supported. Participants enjoyed a tour of the terminal and asphalt products plants followed by a “lunch & learn” session. Edgar Reyes explained how 7-11 Materials developed Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) which are being requested by some ready-mix customers. The EPD software extracts information from the quality control and raw material database, and combines with other information to calculate the carbon footprint of each Ready-Mix product. Jack Dougherty, VSS Technical Manager, gave a short presentation of last year’s accomplishments and this year’s goals. This group really enjoyed getting to know each other better and shared some of the things that makes technical services such a rewarding career: the endless opportunities to learn, the challenge of ever-changing specifications, the exacting requirements of the tests, and the ability to use their problem-solving skills!
