The annual National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) campaign is held every spring to coincide with the start of construction season to encourage safe driving through highway work zones. National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) is an event that takes place across the United States, with partnerships between state departments of transportation (DOT), national road safety organizations, government agencies, private companies and individuals. Each year has a different them, but the key message is for drivers to use extra caution in work zones. For more information, visit the NWZAW website.
Summer and fall are the peak seasons for road construction. Road work is an extremely dangerous occupation. Motorists often speed through work zones in excess of posted speed limits; they are distracted and don’t focus on the road around them. Though these habits create dangerous situations when conditions are ideal, the risks increase when entering work zones. The awareness campaign aims to alert drivers and better protect drivers and workers.
All roadway safety professionals across the country are encouraged to wear orange to proudly show their support of work zone safety. NWZAW and Go Orange Day are especially important to the families of victims who have lost their lives in work zones.
This event is a good opportunity to shine a much-deserved spotlight on how we are all equally responsible for maintaining work-zone safety. So let’s support this event by learning about the importance of practicing extra caution while moving through construction zones and paying attention to motorist and worker safety.
BUILD and the Reed Family Companies started recognizing National Work Zone Awareness Week in April of 2023. The theme for 2025 is "Respect the zone so we all get home." Below are past campaigns, including Wear Orange contests:
2024 Go Orange for Safety Campaign and Contest - 2024 Theme is "Work Zones are temporary. Actions behind the wheel can last forever.”
2023 Go Orange for Safety Campaign and Contest - 2023 Theme is "You play a role in work zone safety. Work with us.”
