National Walking Day

BUILD Team

The first Wednesday in April is National Walking Day. This year it falls on Wednesday April 3rd.  It encourages Americans of all ages to get out and stretch their legs and get their hearts pumping. The American Heart Association sponsors this day to remind people about the health benefits of taking a walk.

Wear your sneakers (or take them with you) to work, and at some point in the day, take a 30-minute walk. Fit in walking morning, noon or night. Walking is one of the most versatile forms of exercise, because you can do it just about anytime, anywhere.

Here are some great ways to make that

30-minutes more enjoyable:

  • Wear comfortable clothes.

  • Take a friend to pass the time.

  • Make sure to stretch those muscles.

  • Drink plenty of water.

  • Move your arms, too.

  • Make sure you have good posture.

How To Observe National Walking Day

  • Take thirty minutes out of your day to go for a walk.

  • Find a trail near you or walk around your neighborhood.

  • You can also visit a local park or walk on your treadmill.

  • Take the stairs when possible or park far away.

  • Take your canine pals with you, too. They need the cardiovascular workout, too!

  • Use #NationalWalkingDay to post on social media.

Why is Walking the Most Popular Form of Exercise? Research has shown that walking at a lively pace at least 150 minutes a week can help you:

  • Think better, feel better and sleep better.

  • Reduce your risk of serious diseases like heart disease, stroke, diabetes and several types of cancer.

  • Improve your blood pressure, blood sugar and blood cholesterol levels.

  • Increase your energy and stamina.

  • Improve your mental and emotional well-being and reduce risk of depression.

  • Improve memory and reduce your risk of dementia.

  • Boost bone strength and reduce your risk of osteoporosis.

  • Prevent weight gain.

If 150 minutes sounds like a lot, remember that even short activity sessions can be added up over the week to reach this goal. And it’s easy to fit in a few minutes of walking a several times a day.
