The Women of CALCIMA recently organized an engaging industry tour, hosted by George Reed inc. (GRI) And 7/11 Materials inc. (7/11), offering invaluable insights into the world of construction materials and the processes that drive this vital sector. With approximately 35 attendees, this event provided a unique opportunity to learn from industry experts and explore key facilities.

The day kicked off with GRI’s Safety Manager Alex Mills leading the attendees through a detailed site safety briefing to ensure a safe and educational experience for all. Next up was a visit to the GRI Quality Control (QC) laboratory, where attendees gained a deeper understanding of the quality control process. grading aggregates, determining the quality of asphalt samples, and an overview of the machinery and processes involved were among the hands-on experiences, allowing participants to witness the meticulous standards that underpin construction materials. Linda Nevills and Phil Reader took the lead in guiding the group through the various stages of the lab tour. Their expertise and enthusiasm were invaluable as attendees delved into the intricacies of the industry.

The tour then continued with a bus ride to the Table Mountain Mine site. This breathtaking location provided a firsthand view of a unique site consisting of Mining, Concrete and Asphalt operations, and the significant role they play in the construction materials supply chain. First stop on site was a visit to the 7/11 Ready Mix Plant. Dustin Sasso and Judy Kelly, experts in concrete sales and production, provided an insightful tour of the plant. Attendees had the chance to witness the intricacies of concrete production and its importance in the construction process. An intriguing presentation on Carbon Cure, A cutting-edge technology, which has the potential to revolutionize the industry. Carbon left the audience eager to explore this innovative approach further.


GRI’s Sales Manager Josh Hinchey took the stage next and shared his expertise surrounding the Table Mountain site, providing a detailed overview of the company’s efforts in the local community, touching on local disaster relief efforts and involvement in community events. As well as efforts within the company regarding S.E.R.V.I.C.E. principles. Martin Colmenares then led a tour through the Mine pit, giving a detailed explanation of mining practices and the responsible use of explosives in producing quality aggregates. The tour highlighted the significance of these operations in supplying materials to the construction industry. The day continued with Kenneth Cooper leading a visit to the asphalt plant, where attendees observed the production of asphalt and its importance in road construction. The tour offered valuable insights into the role of asphalt in the responsible use of recycled materials throughout the construction sector. Attendees also learned about various initiatives undertaken by GRI to reduce the carbon footprint of the industry. These initiatives aim to make the construction materials sector more sustainable and environmentally friendly.


The day concluded with a message from the Construction Materials Manager Cory Turney and an inspiring Story form George Reed’s very own President Margaret Reed. A delicious lunch was provided with a well-deserved break, where attendees had the chance to network and discuss the day's experiences. The Women of CALCIMA tour proved to be an educational and eye-opening event, providing attendees with a deeper understanding of the construction materials sector. We look forward to more such enlightening experiences in the future as CALCIMA continues to be a driving force in the construction and industrial materials industry.
